'60s Glimmer Twins/Moody Blues/VS poll/SPLHCB

It’s time for week 844 of the Stones poll and this week’s question asks: Keith Richards vs Mick Jagger in the 1960s, who contributed more to the band?

vs.

We are in the middle of what perhaps I should call “the Keith VS polls”, since for the 8 or 9 weeks* I have planned of asking these questions; Keith will show up in 7 of them. This is the last week where Keith goes up against MJ. (* It could go 9 weeks if I ask a MJ VS MT question, or even 10 weeks if I ask a BW vs DH question - but that one would need to be worded a bit differently).

The '60s were of course where it all started for the Stones (in '62) and in their first 8 years they released 10 studio albums. They also played a lot of concerts, although up until '67 anyway, early '60s concerts were on the short side, time wise, and it was hard to hear them playing cause of screaming girls and very poor sound systems. Keith and Mick in the early '60s were learning the ropes as far as being rockers went, as was the entre band, although by '69 they were true rock veterans. This was also the time when the Glimmers started to write, although in the ‘60s, it was Mick who wrote most of the lyrics, and Keith the music.

So now it’s time to choose which Glimmer you will pick as far as the ‘60s went. Just click on: Stones Weekly Poll to vote.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Keith Richards vs Mick Jagger in the 1970s, who contributed more to the band?

Mick led this one the entire week, and by a nice margin. To see the poll’s final results, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 843 . I’ll also add the results of this poll to the brand new Stones VS Page 2. Just click on “Band Members” when you get there to see the results.

Now to the Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 486, and as usual, we will vote in 2 different polls for the week. In the first, regular poll, we will ask: What is your favorite song recorded by the Moody Blues?

The Moody Blues formed in the UK back in May of 1964 as El Riot & the Rebels, with Ray Thomas (flute & percussion), John Lodge (bassist/vocalist) and Mike Pinder (keyboards) being the original members. Lodge left shortly after to go to college, and was replaced by Clint Warwick on bass, and around the same time, guitarist/lead vocalist Denny Laine joined, and their manager, Graeme Edge, became their drummer, and the band’s name was changed first to "The M Bs" , and then to “the Moody Blues’. At this point the band played mainly rhythm and blues music. They were then signed by Decca Records.

Their second single released in ‘64, “Go Now”, was a major hit, going all the way to #1 (and to this day their only UK #1),and #10 in the US. Their first album was a hit too, but wasn’t released until Jan of ’65, and a few more minor hit singles came from the LP.

Warwick then left the band after that, and they started to work on their second album, but that LP would never see the light of day, as Lane suddenly quit the band. They re-formed in November of 1966 with John Lodge rejoining, along with guitarist/singer Justin Hayward. At this point the newly reformed Moodies became one of the very first progressive rock acts, and leaving their old R&B sound behind. They would go on to have several hit albums and singles throughout the years and are still an active band today with one member from the original 1964 band (Edge) and two more from the 1966 lineup (Lodge and Hayward). As I usually do with this poll question, I pick the band’s most well-known songs for us to vote on. Besides “Go Now”, other big hits of theirs include “Nights in White Satin, Tuesday Afternoon, (Evening) Time to Get Away, Ride My See-Saw, Isn't Life Strange, I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band), Legend of a Mind, Steppin' in a Slide Zone, and Your Wildest Dreams”. There are another 21 songs listed in the poll choices to vote on. If you would like to read up some more on them before you vote, you can do so here.

To vote in this week’s first rock poll, just click on: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For this week’s VS poll, we ask: 'Crimson And Clover': Tommy James And The Shondells' original vs Joan Jett’s cover, which version is better? .

"Crimson and Clover" was released in 1968 by the US band Tommy James and the Shondells. The tune was written by Tommy James and drummer Peter Lucia and went all the way to #1 on the charts, selling over 5 million copies. The song was covered by Joan Jett and her band The Blackhawks in 1981, on their album I Love Rock 'n Roll , and it became a hit for them too.

As usual, you can listen to both songs before you vote at the voting page, just remember, we are voting on the music only, not the videos. To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: What is your favorite song recorded by Jethro Tull?

Some very close voting in this poll with several ties among the songs we voted on. For those of you who figured that “Aqualung“ would run away with this one, well it didn’t at all, but it did barely hold on to be picked by one vote as their number 1 song with 8.5% of the votes. “Locomotive Breath” placed with 8.4%, and we saw a third place tie between “Hymn 43” and “Thick as a Brick”, at 7.6% each.

You can check out the full final order of where all the other songs ended up, by clicking on: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 485. You can also check out the Top 10 results from this poll at the old Top Ten lists of Songs, Page 5, along with other artists’ top songs that we voted on in the past when we asked this same question.

In last week’s VS poll, we asked:’I Can't Get Next to You': The Temptations' cover vs Savoy Brown’s cover, which version is better

Well it was nice to see that the final results were a lot closer than what I was expecting. To see which version of this song was chosen, just click here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 485. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We close this poll post up as usual with the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 239 and week 8 of rating the Beatle albums. So this week’s new poll question asks: On a scale from zero to ten, how do you rate the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band ?

Sgt. Pepper's was released on June 1, 1967 and was the eighth UK studio album put out by the Beatles and the band's 11th released in North America on Capitol Records and overall the 13th US album. It was a giant hit, spending 27 weeks at #1 on the UK charts and 15 weeks at number one in the US. It won four Grammy Awards in 1968, including Album of the Year. This was a rare thing for any rock group in those days, as the Grammies back then was still controlled by the WW2 generation, who hated both rock music and hippies. This album would be the very first rock LP to receive the best album of the year award.

Paul McCartney wrote 6 of the songs, John Lennon five, and they co-wrote "With a Little Help from My Friends”, a song that Ringo Starr sang lead on. George Harrison wrote one song on the album, “"Within You Without You".

Really, there is a lot more to cover about this album, so if you like you can read my old review of it here, or view the album’s song list there if you wish to see it before you vote.

Okay, to vote and rate Sgt. Pepper's , please use this link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we answered this question On a scale from zero to ten, how do you rate the album Revolver?

Well Revolver scored the best numbers yet for the Beatle albums that we have voted on so far. 97.3% of the voters either gave it a ‘9” or a “10”, with “10” on its own seeing 63.9% of the first place votes. You can check out the full final results from this poll here: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 238. Or, you can check out the top pick at the Beatles Album Page, located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

If you got a good eye or just a great memory, you will realize that about 80% of this poll post was a copy and paste job from last week’s poll post. I’m sorry about that, but typing right now is almost impossible for me, as that’s been the case for me for an entire week now. My swollen fingers are almost impossible to move right now, as I’m still having major arthritis problems in both of my hands. I tell ya, being a cripple sucks big time, and arthritis in one’s hands is the one thing that can silent any writer.

I thank all of you who vote each week in all of our polls!
