RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: John Lennon

"Taxman" was very good lead guitar work indeed by Paul, who was also an excellent lead player, and like Lennon, a better lead player than George. Paul was also a better hard hitting rock drummer than Ringo, too, who usually only played mellow drum tracks.

But does "Taxman" have the best lead guitar in a Beatles song? Not IMO, as to me, the fast take of "Revolution" with Lennon's lead riff is not only the best sounding lead guitar on one of their songs, but on any hard rock song minus one. The only rock song with a better lead riff comes from Keith Richards on the Stones SFTD. What can I say, but acid lead guitar is what I usually like the best! I may have heard better played riffs (which is not the same thing), and for that I go with MT's clean sounding riff on CYHMK, which IMO, contains perhaps the best double lead riffs from 2 different players in one song (not the best weave now, which is a different thing) starting out with Keith's acid lead and then finishing up with MT's great lead in the second half of the song.

Getting back to "Taxman", it was unusual how that one came about. It was one of the few Harrison/Lennon written numbers (the lyrics were started by George and then finished up by Lennon), yet Paul, who had nothing to do with writing it, and was of course the band's bass player, ended up playing the song's lead guitar on it. Always wonder how that came about. I do know that Lennon said in an interview that George wrote the first bunch of lyrics to the song and then asked John to help him finish it, but how Paul ended up playing the lead guitar, I have no clue. John also added a lyric or 2 to George's "Piggies", in fact he wrote the best lyric to that song, about the pigs eating their bacon (not too many songs that address cannibalism, even if technically they don't mean those kinds of pigs). But what a great line that was anyway. But no, that one isn't the other Lennon/Harrison song that I'm thinking of. BTW, there aren't any official penned "Lennon/Harrison" songs out there, including the Lennon/Harrison solo Lennon song written about Paul, "How Do You Sleep", which George came up with the slide guitar part on. That song's lyrics were all written by John.
