Phil says early spring. I went to a Ground Hog Day Gig Years ago. Punxatawny is a quaint if not economically depressed little town. Not at all what you see in the movie. In fact the movie was shot in Ohio and they are still pissed! Don't bring it up if you go. The way it works is, you hop a school bus from the Town Walmart and head up to Knobblers grove which is just a big ass hill in a distant park. A stage is placed at the bottom where they present Phil. They place two scrolls on a table. Each with a prediction of either early or late spring. Which ever scroll Phil waddels to, that is the prediction read. I was talking to locals who filled me in on the old days of Kegs of beer and mayhem. I was keeping warm with a pint of Blackberry brandy. Anyway, because of 9/11 the scene changed drastically. Add ground hog day on the long list of things forever changed because of that day. Afterwards, back on the bus to the town square where the festivities are. Ice sculptures,food, music, clowns, and pretty much everything ground hog. No ground hog to eat though! Phil lives year round with playmates in the local library. They have this huge habitrail like set up. Visitors can see how the dens look ect. It's educational and the groundhogs are well taken care of, but there is no way they get real hibernation time being on display like that. On subject. I too have squirrels in my attic.
