Keno, you care about groundhogs too! We are brothers on this issue. People out here in the country with gardens seek to blast them to death. Which pisses me off. A groundhog seeks to eat only for survival. He is not "stealing" from your garden. Simply hungry for something to eat. There is one who feasts on the cherries from my cherry tree every year. Just watching him eat is worth giving up some cherries. He's in heaven. And there are many groundhogs near where I work. Idiots will run over them. I brake for the peaceful, rolly polly animals with bad eyesight. They are hilarious to watch run. And baby groundhogs rival puppies in the cute department. Who would go out of their way to kill their parents unless they absolutely had to?
I suppose some macho hunter type might want to pull my man card for expressing these opinions on a "varmint". I say pulling the trigger on a defenseless animal makes you more of asshole than a man. Shooting deer for deer meat is one thing. Being gun happy because you like to kill living things dead, and feel some sense of "power" from it, makes you a dick who really needs to wake up.
Anyway. Groundhogs are cool. Watch one closely if you get the chance.
And you're right about the whole Groundhog Day thing. It's just a silly ritual and tradition which has nothing to do with accurately forecasting the weather.
If someone has a garden they should build a fence around it.
