RE: RE: RE: Brian's singing

Gosh, you know I'm a BJ fan just like you dude, but I got to disagree with a lot in what you wrote, but as DA often notes here, we can't agree all of the time, and this is one of those times, so please let me reply below....

There is guess work. We have been told this is the Stones version, I'm just saying it doesn't sound like their kind of playing to me, and I question why they would even do a version of "Memo"?

Because Mick wasn't sure at this point if he should involve the band or not on the song. Plus, as I noted, only Bill might be on this cut, and Bill is the only person noted as playing the bass on Nov 17, and no question Kooper's playing was also used from that session. The rest is a big question for sure!

I made it clear I was talking about side two only and talked about side one separately.

Sorry, but I never caught that, but looking at side 2, I think BJ is on 2 songs.

Well the most recent books and Nico's site have moved it [Downtown Suzie] into the Let It Bleed April sessions

I'm about 99% sure that's incorrect info. I did see the official studio logs from most of the songs up to the early '70s - back when I put together my book, and although the logs are not correct all of the time, the work done on this song in April was mainly just finishing it up, with nobody playing on it that day. So yes, it was finished in April and that was what was used on the Meta LP.... but nothing new was played on it on that day. Perhaps that's where the confusion lies? Just remember what Bill said about this song, that the band only made 2 takes of it, both in the same day, that was it, and those takes were made in May of '68, not in April of '69.

I think whoever is doing the voice on Lucie/Suzy is doing a deeper, or dumber voice if that makes sense, it could have been Brian but could be any Stone

Mick, Brian, and Keith sing the backups for the song, with Mick and Bill sharing the lead at different times. If you listen closely, you can hear 2 deeper backing vocals (MJ and BJ) and one backing of a higher pitch (Keith). The second deeper voice has to be Brian, it can't be Keith, and as I noted, it sounds a bit like his vocals on WTD. Here is the song on YouTube - Downtown Suzie. You can hear 2 deep backing vocals throughout most of the song, but if you listen closely around the 2:30 to 2:40 mark, you can hear one person alone sing in a deep voice: 'hubbiey, hubbiey", and I bet you that's Brian there, it clearly ins't Mick or Keith, the only other person it could be would be Bill, but I've never heard him sing in a deep voice ever before.

He did the WTD voice on a lot of rockers and even things like Empty Heart.

Nope. BJ doesn't even sing on EH, he plays the harp on that song only. Keith sings the backup alone.

His softer voice is the rarer one because they did a less ballads at the time.

Sorry, but you are incorrect here. He mainly sang in his normal voice, which was soft indeed! He only sang in that deep voice twice, from what I can hear. Plus it was flat out noted in some books published in the '70s that on "Walking the Dog", he sang that in a deep voice so to sound like he was a black dude, or should I say, to sound like a black voice.

You Better Move On is pretty much the clearest or cleanest.

Come on my friend, that isn't so, in fact, on YBMO he sang that along with Bill. Try a song like "It's all Over Now", you can hear him clearer on that one, although he sings the backing on there with Keith. But the best vocal Brian ever made, other than his "heavy" voice on WTD, was his vocal harmony on "Ruby Tuesday". You can hear his normal singing voice the best on that one, and no, you won't get his vocals mixed up with Mick or Keith's singing on that song, you can cleanly hear his vocals on RT separate from the Glimmers.

...or 'Tell Me' you can hear him without the rasp too.

Brian didn't sing the backups on "Tell Me". He played the lead guitar on this song, and for whatever reasons, most of the time when he played lead guitar, he didn't sing. One of the exceptions would be when he played the lead (slide) on "I wanna be your Man", and that would be a rare case where he did sing the backing - and yes, in that raspy voice! So that would be a third time he sang in that matter, I had forgotten about that Beatle cover song until I just wrote what I did! Check out the very cool vid of this song at YouTube. I hadn't seen that in a long time.

Otherwise he always had a slightly raspy voice when singing,

Nope, only on 3 songs, perhaps 4, I could have forgotten another one, but all of his other backings were not sung in that matter.

.....I can think of "Sad Day" "She Said Yeah" and "It's Not Easy" being Brian vocals that get overlooked. "Yesterday's Papers" might be him too though that could be Bill as well.

Brian only sings on 2 of those songs. One is "Yesterday's Papers", but I don't hear him singing anything too deep there, his vocal sample on that song sure isn't sung in that matter. Then he also sings backing with Keith on "She Said Yeah", but again, where is that same, deep vocal we hear him singing on WTD?, I just don't hear it on there!

But hey, thanks for getting me to just play all of those songs at YouTube!..... it was a treat indeed to hear on this rainy and cold July day! Shit, if there ever was a stay inside summer day to listen to the Stones, it's today, as it's even snowing in our mountains right now above 12,000 feet!
