Memo from Turner/Backsides/Hubby/Wife teams, more

For week 830 of our Stones poll we will ask this question: 'Memo from Turner' (Stones) vs 'Memo from Turner' (Jagger solo), which version of this song is better?

'Memo from Turner' was one very interesting song, not that much of a hit song, but interesting indeed. It was Mick Jagger’s first solo song, and he first recorded it in mid-1968 for the upcoming soundtrack to the movie Performance, the first movie he would star in. The slide guitar heard in the song was played by Ry Cooder, yet Mick didn't like the way the music turned out for the song, other than for Ry's playing, and he decided to re-do the take, which he would wind up doing several times. The first time he redid the song was with the Stones, on November 17, 1968, which was a truly different version from the first one, with new, different lyrics. Jagger then would redo the song again a few months later, and that version was what would show up as his solo single almost a year later (see here for the solo version's personal: http://www.keno.org/stones_lyrics/memofromturner.html ). There are questions about who actually plays on the Stones version, but Bill Wyman on bass (besides Jagger's vocals) may be the only Stone playing on the song. Charlie Watts was listed as playing drums, and he did play them on that day, but in the official session logs his name shows up with a question mark next to his name, as it isn't known if his drumming was used or if those played earlier by Jim Capali of the band Traffic was used instead. Both are noted as playing drums on the song, but only one of them is heard on the record.

What was happening in the studio on November 17 was that Keith stayed away when he heard that Mick was re-recording the song for his solo number to be used in the movie's soundtrack, in which MJ starred with Keith's girlfriend Anita Pallenberg, and with whom Jagger slept with on the set. Keith was still pissed off about that and this was why he stayed away from the studio when Mick was working on the song, refusing to play on it. Perhaps this tale isn't all true and Keith was just absent for another reason, but it is fact that he didn't play on the song at all, although he was credited for writing it, even if it was totally a Jagger written number. Anyway, the band Traffic had recorded yet another unused version of the song, and some of that, at least one guitar part from that recording (played by Steve Winwood) (and maybe the drums) was used on the Stones recording. Then at the November 17 sessions, on the same day Bill played his bass, and Charlie his drums, was Al Kooper, who played guitar and keyboards on the song. The logs also show that Brian Jones also played guitar on the song, but that may not be so, although Brian was there for sure and the reason why Kooper was there. Jones had invited Kooper into the studio the day before to help the band record the song YCAGWYW, which they finished up the next day - that being this same (next) day that Mick redid MFT with the Stones. Problem with Jones playing guitar on this tune is that his hand was in a cast, so he should have been unable play his guitar, and this was why he invited Kooper into the studio, to play his part for him on the other song being recorded. As it was, Kooper didn't play guitar on YCAGWYW anyway, but instead played the keys and that great French horn, as Jones sat there reading a magazine, unable to take part in the session. The next day Kooper returned and did play guitar on MFT, but... how could Brian had played on it too if his hand was in a cast? BJ's hand/cast was given as to the reason why he didn't play on YCAGWYW, and there is the story about the Rock n Roll Circus that backs this up, where Brian's hand had just come out of that same cast 2 weeks before the show was filmed on December 10, 1968. So Brian's hand had to be in a cast on November 17 if that was the case, and there is no question that he was in fact in a cast around that time. I guess it's possible that he played a bit of guitar with his hand in a cast on MFT, depending on how big the cast was, but that sounds not too likely when you think of it. Can one play guitar with their hand in a cast? Anyone ever try it? But anyway, regardless of what the logs say, I don't believe BJ played on this song, and that's why Winwood 's guitar was kept on the track. If Charlie's drums weren't used either, then this 'Stones" version really isn't a Stones take of the song at all. But officially it is, and since most of us know both versions, let's see now which one we dig more.

I did include in the voting booth videos of the 2 different released versions, just don't be swayed at all by the videos, both which were made by fans who didn't have a clue in putting together photos for these videos. The solo one for Jagger has all of these photos of Keith in the vid, when Keith did divorce himself from the song; while the one for the Stones’ version shows Mick Taylor in the photos, when MT wasn't even in the band yet when the song was made. I'm only using these chock full of errors vids for the music of course, thanks to this past holiday weekend upon us, I didn't have the desire to search to see what else is out there.... Oh, 2 last notes, Jagger's solo cut of the song wasn’t released until August of 1970, while the Stones version not until 1975, on the Metamorphosis LP.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked this question: Of the Stones albums listed, which one had the best back cover? Well there is nothing I dislike more than seeing a tie for first place in any of our polls, and that happened this past week with this question. So this means will we have to have a runoff question - more than likely next week, and put the 2 back side album covers up against each other. The 2 back covers that tied were my 2 favorites as it was, so at least it will be fun to run it again and see which one gets the nod in the end. Those 2 back covers were for Let it Bleed and Hot Rocks which both took in 14.8% of the vote each.

The Classic Rock Poll enters week 472, and as usual, we will vote in 2 different polls for the week. In the first poll we will ask a brand new question which is: Which group/duo was the best thanks to the husband and wife team in the band? Last year we ran a poll question asking for the most interesting rock couple, but this poll has nothing to do with that question, as this one applies to actual talent and couples who only played together in a band (or who played together as a duo).

Unlike last week's question about siblings, where we had close to 40 bands listed, for hubby and wife teams, there weren't too many bands that had a combo like this…. Now the couples had to be officially married to make this list, couples who simply lived together for a few years do not count, or we would have a much longer list to choose from. Also, since this is the cast with most of the groups listed, unlike last week where I suggested we look at the siblings musical talent more so than their singing, for this week it's more of the opposite, whereas the couple's singing will count as much or more as their musicianship, since that’s how the makeup of these groups mainly were known for.

In this week’s VS poll, we ask this: Tiebreaker poll: Tiptoe Through The Tulips (Tiny Tim) vs Yummy Yummy Yummy (The Ohio Express), which song is the corniest?

Talking above about running a tiebreaker poll for the Stones poll next week, well that’s what we got this week in the VS poll. We actually don’t see that many ties for first place in our polls, and this one took place way back in the week of January 10, 2011. Being that it was for a corny poll question, I took my time in re-running the question, which when first asked, wasn’t a VS question at all.

"Yummy Yummy Yummy" is a bubblegum pop song written by Arthur Resnick and Joey Levine, and recorded by The Ohio Express in 1968. It reached #4 on the U.S. Pop Singles chart and #5 in the UK. The Ohio Express wasn't a real band, as it consisted of many different studio musicians playing on the songs that were released by this so called band, that at times included, among others, four musicians who would later make up 10cc, and even Joe Walsh played on 2 of their songs, this before anybody knew who he was. Levine sang the lead vocals on this song. A touring band was also put together (kind of like what was done with the group Steam, after the #1 hit single for that fake band was made) which did play live as “The Ohio Express”, but they never played a note on any of the Ohio Express records, while Levine continued to write the singles and sing the lead on the single only (and in the studio only). Other singers sang on the other songs, including the lead guitarist for the tour band that used their name.

"Tiptoe Through the Tulips" was a song originally published way back in 1929. The song was written by Al Dubin and Joe Burke and hit #1 in that same year with the first cover made by Nick Lucas. In 1968, the very strange and freaky Tiny Tim covered it, and his version went top 20, charting at #17. Tim sang the song, and many of his songs, in falsetto, but as was the case, many didn't know that on his albums, he would sometimes sing some songs in baritone, including a remake of 'I Got You Babe: where he sang Cher's part in falsetto and Sonny's part in baritone. He had to be the strangest music performer ever…. Maybe I should not have linked to the video I did at the voting booth for this song, because watching this clip (taken from the old Laugh-In TV show) will make you wanna hands down vote for this song. But, and a big but, and something I like to note each week, is that we aren't rating the videos at all. Watch the vid and have a good laugh, but you got to rate both songs by the recorded song and music only when you vote. Listening to the video for "Yummy Yummy Yummy", a song I don't think I've heard since, well, 1968, it sounds today like a song the Monkees did with Davy Jones singing lead. I would think that if I didn't know better that it isn’t the Monkees.

So which song out of the 2 will you vote for? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: Which band is the best Rock band thanks to the siblings in the group? This was a fun and well received question, considering it was a major holiday week when normally we don’t see a big turnout in the voting in such a week. One single vote made the difference as to which band was picked first, and that band was The Kinks, with brothers Dave and Ray Davies getting 14.4% of the votes, with second place going to the Allman Brothers Band, with brothers Duane and Gregg Allman at 14.2%. Two great choices made by us fans on this question I feel!

In last week’s VS poll, we asked: 'Take It Easy': Jackson Browne's original vs The Eagles' original, which version is better? Well, for the second week in a row I picked what became the second choice (in other words, the loser) in this poll, only this time I voted knowing that I more than likely didn’t pick a winner. To see if you picked the choice that most of the other voters picked, just go here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 471. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

At the Beatles’ poll it’s week 225, and we ask yet another guitar question, this time for George: What was George’s most significant acoustic guitar part while playing in the Beatles? I wrote last week when we asked this question about Paul, that Paul played little acoustic guitar while in the Beatles, and only 21 songs were listed. Seems that was also the case with lead Beatle guitarist George, who I could only find 26 such songs of him on acoustic. John played most of the acoustic guitar for the Beatles, which is now clear to me after putting these 3 weeks of questions together.

So which song featuring George on acoustic guitar will you go with? To vote this week’s Beatles poll and make your pick, please use this link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: What was Paul's most significant acoustic guitar part while playing in the Beatles? ‘Blackbird’ won this poll by a nice margin, taking in 29.5% of the vote, with ‘Yesterday’ in second place with 15.6%. Well I hope all of my fellow US Gassers enjoyed the 4th of July weekend we just had. Today at my house it got cloudy around noon and rained a bit, so it was one of those rare July days around here where it seemed staying inside was the best bet. But with a few days off in a row, I had more free time then I usually see in my semi-retirement, and with the house not being extra crowded today, as it’s been of late here, today it was just me and my youngest grandson, and then he went out and wow, a quite house for once! So yes, I decided to work today on that Top 10 page I talked about making a few weeks back, for our On-Going polls. These polls are our most voted on, with some of the polls seeing over 20,000 votes for each poll, and I figured many weeks ago it was time to have a Top 10 page for them too, not sure why it took so long to think this up, but building the page was pretty easy to do. So now if you wish to check the results for these polls, and only are interested in the top 10 standings, there’s no need to go to the poll menu to do this, you can view all of the Rock On-Going Polls, along with 2 of the On-Going polls for the Stones and Beatles, too, on this new page. If the page becomes popular enough, I’ll add in more of the other On-Going Beatle and Stones polls results to it. So to check out this new page, just go here http://www.keno.org/classic_rock/top_ten_lists_12.htm to view it.

As always, thanks to all of you who take the time to vote in our polls!
