RE: RE: Memo both solo??

RE: Memo both solo??

Why do I get the feeling that both Memo's are solo versions?

There were 3 or 4 versions made of the song, at least 3 for sure, and at least on one, recorded on Nov 17, 1968, was made with the Stones, that is a fact. Now it's possible none of that was used on the album, and since Klein was in charge of putting the Meta LP together, he could have just said that take was used when it wasn't, but I don't believe that. We will never know for sure, it's like them saying that all of Brian's guitar parts were taken off of HTW, yet when people who work in the studio talk about combining a lot of different sessions into one song, it can get to where all of the guitar parts are not removed as stated. An example would be Ronnie's guitar is still heard on IORR (yet it was noted that his guitar was removed), and we only know this becuse Ron is still alive and noted where his guitar is still heard. BJ of course couldn't do that on HTW.

We have been told there was a group version right but with the sessions for the Stones it's not like Beatles or Elvis where every take and musician is accounted for. There is guess work. We have been told this is the Stones version, I'm just saying it doesn't sound like their kind of playing to me, and I question why they would even do a version of "Memo"? I doubt Keith would ever do it, and Brian likely wouldn't have helped Jagger out by this point either. Could Charlie or Bill be here?? It sounds awful jerky in tempo, and unlike them. Again the so called solo version has much more of their sound if anything. Still if a session player was being used for "Performance" I just think a group version with how Keith and Brian were feeling at the time would have been done or needed.

OK so this is apparently all Stones...

The albums ins't all Stones, many of the tracks are not the Stones at all, and just Jagger.

....but only one track with Brian for sure

Why do you think this? I'm sure he's on more than one cut. If you go by Wikipedia, he's on at least 2 songs, but they don't list who's on every song. I think he's on at least 3 of them.

I made it clear I was talking about side two only and talked about side one separately. Again I am talking only of side two.

the mistitled "Lyle Street Lucy" is almost certainly from April 1969 not 1968

Then why do I hear Brian's voice on the cut? He wasn't around on the April '69 sessions, that's for sure. It was noted in the May '68 session that he played guitar on the song and sang backing vocals, and you can hear him singing a bit, at least you can hear somebody singing one part of the song using the very same "heavy" vocal that BJ used on "Walking the Dog", which wasn't his normal singing voice or anybody in the band's voice. I've only hear that voice on these 2 songs. I would say it had to be BJ voice on there.

Well the most recent books and Nico's site have moved it into the Let It Bleed April sessions. http://www.nzentgraf.de/books/tcw/1969.htm

I think Brian's last was in March for Honky Tonk Woman (by the way I think his version has been booted on this superb quality LP http://www.discogs.com/Rolling-Stones-Deja-Que-Sangre/release/3190668.)

I think whoever is doing the voice on Lucie/Suzy is doing a deeper, or dumber voice if that makes sense, it could have been Brian but could be any Stone

By the way I hear Brian on many 1963-mid 1964 songs. He did the WTD voice on a lot of rockers and even things like Empty Heart. Much more than twice anyhow. His softer voice is the rarer one because they did a less ballads at the time. You Better Move On is pretty much the clearest or cleanest. Time Is On My Side v.1 or Tell Me you can hear him without the rasp too. Otherwise he always had a slightly raspy voice when singing, it sounded cool and he was still doing it once in a while if you listen for it in 1965-66. I can think of "Sad Day" "She Said Yeah" and "It's Not Easy" being Brian vocals that get overlooked. "Yesterday's Papers" might be him too though that could be Bill as well.

Just my ears talking as well as me thinking Nico's site has it pretty together as far as the recordings go. He seems to think Memo is solo too.
