John and Paul were so damn good that they would have made it one way or the other even without those two helping out behind the scene
I find this POV interesting because I've read it before about John and Paul, and I've also read it often about the Glimmers. But the fact of the matter is, we just don't know if they would have made it or not. We know about all the great musicians who made it because, well, they made it. But the world may be full of equally talented people who were never discovered. We just don't know.
To "make it", you need talent but you also need lots and lots of hard work. This is something we tend to forget: how many potentially great musicians may have given up before they got to the "discovering" point because they just got discouraged with the years of seemingly endless hard work? Don't forget that Mick was ready to go back to LSE full time and it was only Brian's relentless cheerleading that kept him in the band.
You also need more than just a little bit of luck, and that luck includes meeting the right people at the right time; in the Beatles' case, those people undoubtedly included Brian Epstein and George Martin.
But there's more. The Beatles had that special "something" which was more than just the sum of their individual talent. Each of them just seemed to bring out the best in the other three. None of their solo careers has shown anything approaching the brilliance of their work together. At least not on a consistent basis.
