The Stones cover gets a 7. It's nice, but also very predictable. I'm not sure why it was made to look like it was photocopied or something. Whatever the intent was, it's not really working for me. The cover would have rated higher with a sharper image.
It wasn't easy picking just one song in the first rock poll. I thought about voting for "In My Life", or maybe "When We Was Fab", or maybe "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock 'n Roll Band". But I went for Skynyrd's "Workin' for MCA". Wonderful tongue-in-cheek lyrics from RVZ, written right after the band was signed by MCA. The song was performed a few months later at a private concert in front of the MCA brass. LOL!
"School's Out" in the second rock poll. Maybe it resonates with me more because I was in high school when it came out. But mostly, I'm just really sick of the entire "The Wall" album. I'm sick of hearing how great it is when it's never done anything for me. I consider it to be just another overrated album.
There is a "chicken or the egg" aspect to the Beatles question. Without Brian Epstein to promote them and George Martin to record them, the Beatles never would have become the iconic band that they were. But without these four talented boys, there would have been nothing to promote and record. So I decided that "most essential" had to lie with the raw material. I ended up voting for John because I think he would have been the most irreplaceable member of the band. For the songs he wrote, for his unique and instantly recognizeable voice, but mostly because in the early days, he was the incarnation of the band's irreverent attitude which endeared them to so many.
