I usuall prefer small-club gigs to large shows, and my post will reflect this.
Best would probably be INXS at a place called the Spectrum in the early 90s. I saw so many great shows there, and I wasn't the only one. The place had acquired kind of a mythical aura among concert goers, but even a series of protests and signed petitions weren't enough to save it from being torn down a few years ago. Condo buildings now occupy the spot. More tax revenues for the city.
Another strong contender for best would be the Red Devils, a short-lived (unfortunately!) band which I saw at a free outdoor gig about 20 years ago. The band played a music that mixed blues and punk rock and put on an explosive performance! The 20-year old guitarist was like a young Jimi Hendrix.
Worst was a band whose name I've long forgotten, which played a small bar on a January night, right in the middle of the worst snow storm of the season. Due to the atrocious weather conditions and the no-name status of the band, the place was virtually empty. So my buddy and I took a table right in front of the stage. We were only a few feet away from the band. They were awful and we were totally bored. After about a half an hour, we decided to leave. Since there were about 10 people in the audience and we were right in front of the stage, it was pretty embarrassing.
