Very good question. I can EASILY tell you what the worst was..The Cars at Brendan Byrne Arena in 1984. They were so hot then after the release of their latest album and me and a bunch of my friends made the trek to New Jersey. The show was so short that we thought it was an intermission when they left the stage. Matter of fact, they didn't even get all the way off the stage before they "returned" for their "encore"! We figured later that it was either an encore or they forgot to do one more song before a break. (Which obviously it WASNT a break) Very disappointed.
The best non Stones show is a hard question to answer. At different stages of my life I liked bands tht I dont care for much now. When I saw Springsteen in 85 I thought that was the best because I was really into him at that point. Same for when I saw U2 shortly after Springsteen. My wife got me into John Mellencamp and Rod Stewart and when I saw them I thought they were the best to that point.
Looking back now, and from the way I feel right now, my answer would be Tom Petty. I saw several of his shows, but the one in NJ in 1989 and the next tour he did when I saw him on Long Island were 2 of the best shows I've ever seen. John Fogerty and the Who rank as a very close second, but I'm gonna have to say Petty was the best show besides the Stones shows for me.
