For reasons similar to the ones you state, I have deliberately avoided Dylan shows. My brother left early from the last one he was at, because Dylan just mumbled as he played a small keyboard with his back pretty much to his audience. My daughter who is a big fan also felt let down when she saw him in Florida. That said, I have a friend who follows him all over the World, so......
I've seen so many name bands over the years, it's really hard to say what my fave gig outside of the Stones is...maybe the second time I saw the Kinks, which was at the Barrowland.
Sometimes you get a real surprise. I went to see Santana at the Apollo at some point in the seventies, and the warm up band was Earth Wind and Fire. They were amazing, crowd wouldn't let them off the stage, wasn't expecting that! Another time I know I saw Warren Zevon open for Jackson Brown, and he made zero impression on me.
I would say that for the last five or six years I have caught San Francisco act Chuck Prophet and his band, and they are easily amongst my best shows, and this year was no exception. I could say the same for old timer Southside Johnnie(sp?) and his band, really great show when they hit the Renfrew Ferry. Funny thing, I don't have one of his albums.
Worst gig? Curved Air!
