Charlie's best/Rock history/FB VS STH/George

Week 799 of our Stones poll is here and for the poll this week, the question is: Tiebreaker poll: On which song did Charlie Watts play his drums best, 'Get Off Of My Cloud' or 'Paint It Black'? Now if you been voting at our Stones poll for a long time, in fact, like a very long time, let’s say even 12 or 13 years, you might not recall ever voting in such a poll. But it did take place and a tie occurred way back when we did ask this, and that was way back in the first week of January, 2000!

I do like running tiebreaker polls even if only one a year is conducted at any of our weekly polls on average, as ties for first place rarely happen. But why a tiebreaker poll was never run for this question I can’t tell you, it just got away and was forgotten until a week or 2 ago when I noticed the tie listed in one of the Stones list pages. So with almost a full 15 years since this question was first asked, we will hopefully, finally, get an answer to this question.

So which of these 2 Stone songs do you think Charlie played his best on? Let us know by voting in this poll: Stones Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Which Stone would you like to invite over for Thanksgiving dinner the most?. I had a feeling this question would work out just like a “who is your favorite Stone” question would end up, with Keith Richards being picked first – and I was correct, as Keith received 16.3% of the votes. Not as big a win we’ve seen Keith come up with in the past with this kind of question, but he was still the main man in the band that most Stones fan would like to have turkey with.

You can click on this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 798 for the full, final poll results.

Next up, let’s talk about the Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 441, and we’ll be running the usual 2 poll questions for the week. With the first question, let’s ask this: What was the most important moment in Rock history? It’s always fun at the end of the year to look back on things that have taken place in our lives, as it’s a great time to reflect, so let’s do so this week with our favorite music.

Rock music has been around since the early 1950s and yes, it has had some very interesting history connected to it. But what was the most important event ever in Rock? There are 50 different events listed, some are connected to just songs or albums, some to guitar playing, some to special concerts, and a lot list different events that took place. So depending on what you feel is most important to the genre, like guitar playing or live concerts, etc, will determine what you go with.

Some of things listed might not seem like a big deal today, but they all were a big deal at one time and why they are looked at as most important events in the history of the music. You just need to figure out which one was the most important, so to do that and view the list, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

At the VS Rock poll this week we will ask this:'Free Bird' (by Lynyrd Skynyrd) vs 'Stairway to Heaven' (by Led Zeppelin), which song is best? These 2 monster songs were looked at for years as 2 of the best rock songs ever written and recorded, although of late I noticed that the Skynyrd song isn’t always listed in that matter anymore. Not sure why, but both of these songs are still special to me and many others.

'Stairway to Heaven' came out first, in 1971 on the LP Led Zeppelin IV. It was written by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, but bassist John Paul Jones wrote the song’s intro and played those wonderful recorders that got the song off to a great start. Yet he wasn't credited for what he came up with.

'Free Bird' came out on Skynyrd’s debut LP in 1973 and then was released as a single a year later. It was composed by Allen Collins and Ronnie Van Zant. Collins wrote the music and even helped out with the lyrics, which usually was just Van Zant’s deal. The opening lyrics came from a question Collins girlfriend’s had asked him once and he started to write a song around what she asked.

So which song do you like more? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: What is the best rock song to play for Thanksgiving? “Alice's Restaurant Massacree” by Arlo Guthrie was the top pick with 27.5% of the votes, compared to the 15.6% that Led Zeppelin’s “Thank You” brought in. A nice big win for Guthrie’s true tale, yet I was thinking it was going to do even better than that.

To view the full, final results from this poll, just click on: Classic Rock Poll week 440. The top 10 from this poll will also be listed on the new: Top Ten Lists Page 11.

In last week’s VS poll we asked: ' I Thank You' (original by Sam and Dave) vs 'I Thank You' (acoustic by ZZ Top), which version is better? Something that almost never happens at the VS poll ended up taking place by the time the poll’s finial result came in, that being, we had a 50/50 tie for both songs. This is only the second time in the 2 plus years of the VS poll that we have ended with a tie, and the first time this took place was with one of the few VS poll run that included more than 2 songs listed.

I noted above that I like to run tiebreaker polls when this rare event takes place, since usually you can eliminate from the voting all the other choices that were in the first poll and just put up the 2 that tied for the tiebreaker poll. But in our VS poll, most of the time, including this time, we already put the 2 songs up against each other, so I see no need to do that again, if we are evenly split on those 2 songs that we already put it up against each other, that’s how it should stand with no need to run the same poll again.

To view the tie results, click on: Classic Rock VS Poll week 440. You can also check out the final results at the new VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

Now to the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 194, and the question is: Of the Beatles songs to feature George on lead guitar, which one did he play best on? (Part 1 of 3) . We already asked this question for John and Paul, now it’s time to look at the band’s real lead guitar player and see which one he shinned the most on. There are a total of 115 songs that George played lead on, so we’re break this up into 3 parts, with the best of the songs chosen in the first 2 parts going up against each other a final time in Part 3.

One thing you notice with George is how he’s a very mellow player, unlike the song’s we listed for Paul and John, when they played lead, there were some songs where their guitar just stood out big time. This is of course the case with most lead guitar players, but not for George. Even when he played his best, he still didn’t stand out a whole a lot. No, George was no show off, but he still played a great guitar regardless.

To make your pick for his best playing in Part 1 (BTW, songs are being listed alphabetically) , just click on: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: Which Beatle would you like to invite over for Thanksgiving dinner the most? This one played out in the same way the Stones poll turned out, with the most loved Beatle getting picked, that being John Lennon.

To see the full results for this poll, click on: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 193.

I thank all of you who take part in the voting here each week in our 4 weekly polls, especially thanks to everybody who took part during a major holiday week like we just had last week here in the US. Cheers!
