RE: RE: RE: Strawberry Fields (and Philip)

I was visiting rock photographer Philip Kamin in NYC at his old place about 6 or 7 years ago and said to him "lets take a walk to Strawberry Fields, I've never been there". Philip is more a Beatles fan than a Stones fan, and personally knows Paul McCartney (he was Paul's official photographer for one of his tours). Philip had been living in that apartment for about 10 years by then and it was about a 10 to 15 minute walk to Strawberry Fields from there. So he tells me that he had never been there himself! Philip is that way, he knows more people than most folks do (and not just famous ones), yet has few friends; he has been all over the world on tours with all of the biggest rock stars, but other than that he rarely goes out (unless his wife/girlfriends drag him out). He had this fantastic view of the city, including a great view of the 42nd Street Bridge and East River, from his giant living room windows at his old pad, yet he had the drapes shut (even in the daylight). His then wife bitched to me that he always had them drawn like that. So anyway, I got him to go with me. We got outside and he starts to hail a cap. "Philip, its just a short hike to Strawberry Fields from here" I told him. But no, we had to take a damn cab to get there.

When we did get there, it was very cool indeed. Lots of people, a few roses and other things scattered around the "Imagine" memorial on the sidewalk, and at least that day everybody seems respectful to the place. We sat on one of the benches and talked for a good time to a few of the other people there about John and the Beatles. When it was time to leave, Philip said to me that he could not believe he never visited the place before and that he would visit it again soon. I'm not sure if he ever did, and he lives in lower Manhattan now. But the place was peaceful and I would like to visit it again some day, and it did move Philip, too. I think if you are a fan of John's you will get a peaceful feeling if you visit it one day, too. Yet I don't know why any non-Beatles fans would go there. Only because it is a NYC tourist attraction?
