Ok here is where I defend Ali:
Ali was a black American athlete that was not trying to sell you shoes or clothes(Mike Jordan & Tiger head the list).
Ali stood up for what he belived(not going to Vietnam) and was stripped of his title - WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION, which he later won back. His fights took him all over the world, they were world events not just sporting events.
I know I sound old now but back in the day the title of WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION really meant something. A title bout was a big event, a must see.
For what it is worth ESPN came out with something like the greatest athletes EVER and Ali came in 3rd all-time behind The Babe and Mike Jordan
I know that all the heavyweight boxers are now playing Tight End in the NFL or NBA or MMA, but boxing at one time was a big sport
A great sports/world event was when Ali lit to Olympic Torch at the Atlanta games. Yes he is an icon and when he dies it will be Headline news.
He was a very recognizable figure not only in sport but world politics as well
