As I recall Nixon called the anti-war protesters "bums." The father of one of the victims responded "My daughter wasn't a bum." He went on to oppose the war.

There was a lot of excess on the left back then, but in retrospect I find it more comforting to remember the activism than feel today's complacency and frightened acceptance.

The Band had a great, folksy line:

"Now two young kids might start a ruckus

You know they feel you trying to shuck us"

There was a lot of "shuckin'" going on then and even more now.
