My point was that you would need to pay taxes in order to get proper funding for everything the US government wants.
As I said before: I don't mind paying taxes as long as the government puts it to good use. Not even the shitload of euros I'm paying now. Everyone wants a safe and green environment, a good legal system, a top notch education available for everyone, decent social security and proper health care and a place were companies enjoy being a part of so that there's plenty of work around. That costs money and I'm willing to pay for it.
But - and I'm stating the obvious here - we have 16,5 milion people in the Netherlands and everybody wants to do it slightly different. That's where the mess comes from.
I agree it would be different if the state would be run more like a company, as in admitting that some 'solutions' don't work. Instead of cutting those off, we get 'workgroups' who will go on and on to try to breathe life in it. Costs a ton and nine out of ten times it doesn't work. That's something the ones in control should work on.
Here's what makes it extra hard in the Netherlands: we have a multi-party system. So the social democrats, the christian democrats and the evangelical christian currently have a coalition running that needs to cut on it's expenses. But they disagree on how. A good government needs to be able to make tough decisions. This one can't.
