I think part of the problem is that insurance companies are for-profit entities. By their very nature, they want to take in as much as possible in revenue, and put out as little as possible in claims money.
The problem, as I see it, is that we are not talking about cars or TVs or video game consoles here. In those industries --- where a tangible product is actually produced and sold --- the victory goes to the one who can deliver the highest quality product at the lowest price. Compettion drives efficiences, and the market place votes with its pocketbook.
Health care is not the same though, and that is at the root of the probelm. Somehow, health insurance was spawned as a for-profit entity. Maybe THAT should have never happened. An insurance company --- like a car or electronics company --- has as its primary motivator, profit.
So a car company, for example, will try to build a better mousetrap, as they say. A better, cheaper car that will have customers (hopefully) flocking to their stores. And good for them --- if you build it, they will come.
But, unlike the car companies, when insurance companies cut costs by denying claims and refusing to cover certain individuals, real, actual people get hurt --- financially and physically.
But the status quo has insurance companies as for-profit. I don't claim to know what the best solution for this mess is. But Pandora's box has been opened here, it's going to be difficult to nuke this whole thing and start over.
