As a society, we are doomed. Not solely due to the current healthcare mess, but because of the political system in general. It has morphed from a republic "of the people, by the people, and for the people" into a state controlled by a small group of lawyers and large corporate conglomerates(read "lobbyists").
As far as health care is concerned, this bill is a boondoggle. The final version will contain enough pork to choke a horse, but it will not do anything to improve our situation.
Here's a few things I would like to see happen:
1) Allow competition across state lines, and make it easier to do so.
2) Provide for catastrophic care for all. No one in this great country should have to lose their life savings due to an unforeseen illness.
By their very nature, insurance companies are a paradox--- they make money by charging as MUCH as they can for premiums AND shelling out as LITTLE as they can in payments to consumers. Coupled with a lack of competition in the states, it's a great scam for them. Charge a lot, pay out a little; what's a consumer to do?
A car company run this way would go out of business because somebody would build a better car for the same (or less) amount of money. The consumer has a choice and votes with his pocketbook. That's capitalism.
Somehow, we have let the insurance companies slide out from under this basic tenet of our society. Time to bring them back to the flock.
