I was in Greek Orthodox school in The Bronx... I had a dickens of a time there for the 4½ years I was there
I had it just as bad for grades 1 thru 3 - while in Roman Catholic parochial Hell school (St Raphael Catholic School in East Meadow, NY). Really, 90% of the kids who were forced to go to such Catholic schools have a horror story or 10 to tell.
In third grade I had this lay teacher named "Miss Noe". Talk about a nut's nut. She was only 19 years old - and still going to school herself at night to get a teacher's degree, but her family was close friends with the nun who ran the school and she gave this fruitcake a job teaching around 50 of us third graders. She flat out hated about 40 out of her 50 students (including me) and put us all thru hell in that class. One day she made a kid stay in the classroom after school was over for punishment and claimed she forgot he was in there and she went on home, locking him in the classroom. The police were called when the kid didn't come from school and after hours of looking for him, they went to the school about 10 o'clock at night and found him in the classroom crying! You think she would have been fired for that, right? Well no, of course not! But I always pointed to that nut as to one of the main reasons I stopped believing in the God fairytale story, as it was during that year and at that young age, that I became a atheist. Her, and the fact that my best friend was a Jew, and when I asked my mother if Peter and his parents were going to Hell for not believing in Jesus (as we were taught in school), my mom would say "No, their god would take care of them". So I figured at first that Pete's family had a better god then we had - and they didn't have to go to church - ever - and they could even eat meat on fridays, too! So I started to put 2 and 2 together and I realized after that there was no god, and it was all just made up crap by adults.
But I have to disagree about your brother. Nobody should serve any time at all for selling drugs - since all drugs should be legal for those over 18. You want to pollute your body with heroin or other drugs - that's your business as long as you don't force it on others. If H was legal, junkies won't have to rob others to get their fix. When the government makes something like a drug illegal - that's the real crime and that's the only reason why the price goes thru the roof for the drug, and junkies have to steal or do other illegal things to afford their habit. It just blows me away how stupid society and most governments are when it comes to drugs.
But yes, you're right, things in your past and childhood are what make you as you become an adult. So in a way I'm glad I went to that school for my first 3 years. It sure has hell taught me how not to live my life as an adult and what not to believe in.
