2 Stones vids/LIB/B&B/Acid guitar/Fabs best riff

Is this really week 995 of the Stones Poll? Yep, we’re almost to week 1,000, damn that’s a lot of Stones polls! We’re been voting on 3 new polls a week of late and will keep doing so until we hit week 1,000. So that includes the usual Stones album VS poll, plus 2 Stones video polls a week, too. This week’s first video question asks this: Rate the Rolling Stones TV performance for “Have You Seen Your Mother Baby Standing in the Shadow"

This tune comes from 1966 and is the Stones longest titled song, if nothing else. It was kind of an in-between song, made really before they started work on the BTB LP and this one didn't show up on any studio album. But once released as a single, it was a top 10 hit in both the US and UK. Written by Keith Richards, he has stated that this was the very first song that he ever wrote on the piano. Yet on the studio cut, both Brian Jones and Ian Stewart are credited as playing piano, not Keith, who is down as playing rhythm guitar and singing the backing vocals. Brian also played the lead acid like guitar on this one. Then getting back to the piano, Wki claims that Jack Nitzsche is listed in the session logs too for playing the keys, but I don't recall seeing that in the logs that I’ve seen. But this is - I believe, the only Stones song written by Keith that Brian played the lead guitar on. Usually back in the '60s, if Keith wrote the music to a song, he played the lead himself, unlike today where often Ronnie will play lead for him sometimes on his self-penned songs.

The single's picture sleeve included the famous photo of the band dressed in drag. That came from the Peter Whitehead's promotional film for this single - which showed the Stones getting dressed up in drag and then walking down the streets in that matter - with Bill being pushed in a wheelchair. It is considered one of the first music videos, but I can't find that vid anywhere online anymore. So what we will rate here comes from The Ed Sullivan Show, which aired on September 11, 1966. I actually like this one better anyway, even if I rather have us rate the video.

I noted above about who played what in the studio for this song, for this clip from the Sullivan Show, it shows Keith playing piano while Brian is on guitar. Interesting since where there are many Stones videos out there from the '60s showing Keith as the only guitarist while BJ is playing some other instrument, this is the only one I can think of where Brian is shown as the lone guitar player and Keith is playing another instrument.

This next paragraph is the usual repeat that you read before… but it’s still important, so I’ll note it again….: There will be a link to the video in the voting booth so you can view it before you vote. Do remember that yes, we are rating this video for this poll, so where I often say that the videos linked to at the voting booth are only there so you can hear the song before you vote - but don't vote on the video - well for this kind of question that doesn't apply at all, as you most definitely should vote 100% on what the video is all about for this question.

To cast your vote in this first poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

The Stones second poll this week will ask this: Rate the Rolling Stones video for “Sex Drive”

Along with the song "Highwire", "Sex Drive" was released in 1990 as a single and showed up on the live LP Flashpoint, which was the first Rolling Stones release of the 1990s - while these 2 songs were the last 2 studio songs to feature Bill Wyman as a Stone before he left the band.

"Sex Drive" is a disco like sounding tune, if you want to be nice, I guess you can call it funk. The official promo video for "Sex Drive" was directed by filmmaker Julien Temple for the Stones. I guess it got an "R" rating since it shows some bare female butt in it, and when it was first released it wasn't showed on U.S. TV because of that. U.S. censors would have been fine if it had shown a person getting shot in the head, but showing nudity?! Hell no! Yet with that said, still today YouTube feels they have to warn you with a notice before you see the video, as to what it’s about.

Now, remember the bit I repeated above for the first vid - and what we are voting on here…well that all applies for this vid too. To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

The Stones third poll running this week is where we conduct the Stones album VS matchups, and this week’s question asks this: Let it Bleed vs Black and Blue, which album do you like the best?

vs

This week we return to “The Bleed Polls” series, featuring the 1969 masterpiece release Let it Bleed. In past battles this LP is doing great, with a 17-1 record, good for second place in the album standings. This week it goes up against 1976’s Black and Blue, the first LP with Ron Wood (well, kinda). B&B is having a hard time in these matches, with a losing record of 3-16 and way down in the standings, just 5 spots from the bottom.

To see the song list for each album, for Let it Bleed, click on: LIB, and for Black and Blue, click here: B&B.

To cast your vote in this third Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 3” to vote on this question.

Looking back at our 3 Stones polls last week, at the first poll we answered this question: Rate the Rolling Stones TV performance for "Ruby Tuesday"

Both videos did very well last week. For this one of the TV performance of the song “Ruby Tuesday", it scored a “10”, with one of the highest percentages reached for a Stones video with a 10 rating recorded.

To check out the full final results, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 994, poll 1. Or, you can check out and see how all of the other videos that we have rated in the past have done by going here: Stones Fans Top Pick Lists - Page 2, under “Video Ratings”.

Looking back at last week’s second Stones poll, the question was: Rate the Rolling Stones video for 'Dead Flowers'(Alternate version)

This one scored a ten rating too! You can view the final results from this one here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 994, poll 2. Or, like with the first vid, you can check out and see how all of the other videos that we have rated in the past have done (or even watch the other vids) by going here: Stones Fans Top Pick Lists - Page 2, under “Video Ratings”.

Looking back at last week’s VS Stones poll, the question was: Sticky Fingers vs Voodoo Lounge, which album do you like the best?

vs

The results were not close at all, but nobody expected close results to take place anyway… You can view the landslide results from this poll by clicking here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 994, poll 2. Or, you can see the final results and check out the updated, current album standings at the Stones VS Page 1.

Now over to the Classic Rock Poll, where we enter poll week 635, and because we’re running 3 poll questions at the Stones poll this week, for the next 5 weeks (at least) we will just run the normal first Rock poll question and not run the Rock VS poll.

So for this week’s only Rock weekly poll, we will continue with the same multi week question we been asking: Who played the best acid guitar heard in a rock song (Part 3 of 4)?

Part 3 just might be the hardest week yet for you to pick just one song from our list of 24 songs (no question it will be for me anyway). I could vote for every one of the 24 songs listed this week! So which song and acid guitar player will you end up choosing from this week’s new list? Just click here to see the new list and make your pick: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

Looking back at last week’s first Rock poll, it asked: Who played the best acid guitar heard in a rock song (Part 2 of 4)?

As expected, very close voting, and 9 songs/guitarists will make their way into round 4 of this poll. They are: Foxy Lady - Jimi Hendrix - Acid guitar by Jimi Hendrix (5.1%), Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin - Acid guitar by Jimmy Page (5.1%), Cold Turkey - John Lennon - Acid guitar by John Lennon (5%), Stray Cat Blues - Rolling Stones - Acid guitars by Keith Richards & Brian Jones (5%), Ball and Chain - Janis Joplin - Acid guitar by James Gurley (4.8%), All Day and All of the Night - The Kinks - Acid guitar by Dave Davies (4.8%) Down by the River - Neil Young - Acid guitar by Neil Young (4.8%), Highway Star – Deep Purple – Acid guitar by Ritchie Blackmore (4.7%), and I´m Going Home (live at Woodstock) - Ten Years After - Acid guitar by Alvin Lee (4.7%).

To see the full final results from Part 2, just click here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 634.

Okay, we finish up this poll post as usual with the Beatles poll, where we enter week 388 of voting, and ask this new question: What is the best guitar riff heard on a Beatles song?

This was one of those polls that was fun to put together. I came up with 19 songs to list for the poll choices. John Lennon has almost as many riffs from the songs listed in this poll (9) as the Beatles lead guitarist George Harrison has (11). Paul McCartney, who of course usually played bass, is listed 5 times, while guest Eric Clapton is listed once.

To vote in this poll, please go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we asked: What is the most forgotten Beatles song on a studio (UK) album?

This poll had close voting all week long in it and that’s how the final results finished up - real close. The song picked by just one vote was “You Like Me Too Much”, from Help!.

To see the poll’s full, final results, just click here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 387. Plus the top pick will also show up on the Beatles Miscellaneous results Page over at the Lennon site.

Well that does it for yet another poll post.... Summer is just about over I guess, the kids here all go back to school Monday morning and for my grandson it's his final, senor year. That had me looking at an old photo I have saved on my computer that I took of him 12 years ago this week, as he was heading out the door and off to school for the very first time ever. How has 12 years already passed by since then, and what happen to that cute little kid I once had? But it's like the same thing with these polls with week 1000 just about here. But then again, no, the Stones poll almost seems like it has been running forever. 12 years ago this week the Stones poll was already in year 7 of polling, and they were around before my grandson was even born. Yet now their ending is somewhat near, too. But they will live on for a while at the Rock poll once week 1,000 gets here and I can't program them at the Stones poll anymore. Too bad I never got that poll admin upgraded done in time, but even in retirement, time still ain't on my side and it waits for no one, and it won’t wait for me either. Gee, where there I hear that one before, Ronnie?
