There is no true answer to all of this other than the WW2 generation who lead the media back then made a big deal about these killings as a way to show that hippies were evil and needed to be stopped. Really, it was mainly that and was why they made a big deal out of it, as us hippies of the late '60s were looked at as a major threat to the conservative lifestyle that was placed on our society in the 1950s. The rise of Rock music was blamed for that change at first, and Mason had his rock connections, so he was perfect to use in this matter by the right who controlled everything at that time. Still, the bottom line was that Mason was not your normal killer, not at all, and he killed a movie actress who everybody knew, so that was a part of it and made it a big thing, too.
Why did he turn into the monster he was? Well above in another thread we are talking about sex perverts, including child molesters like Trump (really, even worst than Trump), and that was something Manson was involved in as a child. His own mother, who was an unmarried hooker, was selling him to men when he was a boy, so no wonder he turned out like he did.
