If non Hinfus follow Hinduism it is usually called Vedanta.
It is correct that unless you are born into Hinduism, you can't convert and become a Hindu. You can believe in it and the Hindus will accept you as a believer, but not as a true Hindu. I guess it's the only major religion that does that, as most religions want you to join them - other than Buddhism too, as they don't care either way if you want to join them or not. But you can become a Buddhist if you like and also stay whatever you were before you joined. So you have many Buddhists who are also still Jewish, or Christians, etc. Yet the Hindus won't let you become one of of them. So different than Christianity, which wants to brainwash you into believing in their religion only and covert you and everybody else.
