So in a recent interview, Keith referred to The Beatles SGT PEPPER as a "Mishmash of rubbish." He even puts down SATANIC MAJESTIES, "Oh, if you can make a load of shit, so can we.” I dunno, maybe this is just Keith trying to make headlines, but it's a very strange thing to say.
Now, I kinda have to agree with him about SATANIC MAJESTIES although I don't think it's that bad. I just never really got into their psychedelic period. I liked AFTERMATH just fine, but BETWEEN THE BUTTONS and MAJESTIES never really did it for me. I did always feel that MAJESTIES itself was the Stones trying to make SGT. PEPPER and Keith confirms this.
But I can't agree with Keith about SGT PEPPER. It IS a genius album! All the Beatles psychedelic stuff was (well maybe not MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR, but "I Am the Walrus" remains one my favorites). I mean The Beatles were kind of the front-runners when it came to the psychedelic music scene. When PEPPER came out, it didn't sound like anything else. So everyone now wanted to ride the gravy train and make their own version of PEPPER.
I don't think The Stones were necessarily in their comfort zone doing that kind of stuff, although Brian managed to come up with some neat atmospheric touches. So maybe Keith was integral in saying "You know what, let's go back to doing what we do best." And the work speaks for itself. When they got to BEGGARS BANQUET, they really found a new groove, made it their own, and produced some of the finest albums in the next couple years.
So yeah... love you Keith, but your comment confuses me.
