Pet Sounds is a masterpiece in more ways than one: songwriting, arranging, production, and vocal harmony. It is one of my favorite all time albums, but I have a hard time listening to more than one side at a time since, with a few exceptions, it has a sad and melancholy vibe to it. I wouldn't consider it to be a psychedelic album, as it is more pop-rock. However, there are some far-out sounds there that had never before made it onto a rock recording. The sci-fi sounding theremin toward the end of "I Just Wasn't made for These Times" for example. Pet Sounds was the album that spurred The Beatles to match it with Sgt. Pepper, since the Beatles and Beach Boys (Brian Wilson particularly) had a friendly rivalry going. By 1967, in terms of sales and chart position, the Beatles went on to win that particular battle.
