RE: A word or two (or 500) about Bob Dylan nsc

Dylan is polarizing, at times the highest musical standout and at other times a deliberately difficult basket case. The man himself is proving to be more and more ridiculous these days with comments that ought to be thought out more before their utterance, but in the early days he was the most like Brian Jones of just about anyone. By that I mean he was educated and smart, musically, historically, and otherwise. He knew his field and a lot of its branches, and like Jones was a kind of driven singularity of a character that was going to revolutionize music no matter what.

And he did, at least until his motorcycle crash or so. I don't listen to much of his folk/protest period anymore, but some of the songs stand out so much (Girl from the North Country, To Ramona) they still get me EVERY time. To me, he was ahead of everyone with his trio of albums Bringing It', '61, and Blonde.' Along with Blood on the Tracks, his albums Desire, Time Out of Mind, and Love and Theft are indispensable for anyone testing him out. They are all masterpieces. (Theft's companion piece, the Masked and Anonymous soundtrack, shows how great that particular band was at the time, as well).

Much of the rest of everything he's ever done is fairly boring, if not outright garbage. Some of it is decent. His religious mutations are completely ridiculous to me, if not to him. His voice is irrelevant, it is what it is, it delivers his superior lyrics. I don't really get his abrasive attitude and apparent bitterness, (I've read he can be an asshole on that never-ending tour) but again, that is pretty irrelevant to how I process Dylan. Overall, he's one of music's more important figures but for me doesn't come close to the overall magnitude and brilliance of the Stones.
