RE:A word or two (or 500) about Bob Dylan nsc

Dylan is kind of like The Beatles to me. That means I'm pretty ambivalent towards the guy. I'm not much of a folkie, so a lot of his earlier stuff just seems like Peter Paul and Mary with drugs to me. I had a friend in high school that really loved him, so I heard a lot of his stuff. Back then I liked Highway 61 the best, and I still like that, but like when I was a kid. More than a few years back I grabbed Blonde on Blonde just because FPM mentioned how much he liked it in passing and I gotta agree, that's a major piece of work right there. I think it's his best, but I need to be in the mood for it. For his latter day stuff, I really like Love and Theft, but the further away from, "Wow! I didn't think he had this in him" I get, the more it kind of seems like instead of profound songs, he comes up with some clever turns of phrase. But who the fuck needs to be profound all the time?

He's pretty intimidating to get interested in if you didn't grow up with the guy around. I mean, where the hell do you start? [As an aside, in modern terms, Hey Robert Pollard - where the hell does someone start with you? How about ten really good, finished songs a year instead of ten albums of ideas?] He's got so much stuff and his peaks are high and his valleys are low. If you're not a fanboy and you get something like say, Slow Train Coming, you can be sorely disappointed!
