I've always thought that Dylan, among others, is about the greatest writer in music. But "song"writing is different. It encompasses more than just thought, lyrics, and flow. It means pairing all of that with melody, rhythm, chord changes, percussion, and more. Songwriting, to me, is equal parts poetry, thought, and lyrics---mixed with chords, sound texture, vocals in most cases, and that intangable "something." In other words, it is music and words working together to achieve something far greater. In this way, Dylan falls short a great deal of the time, and Lennon/McCartney somehow succeed a great deal more of the time, despite their other shortcomings.
All of this is why the Stones are simply the greatest, however, because with them it is not all exclusively about words OR music, but really the bursting, pulsating, alchemical mixture of the two, leading to the greatest effect possible. And that effect, so often, is the sonic equivalent of a guitar-serenaded blissed-out aurora-borealis orgasm mixed with a heroin overdose inside God's vagina---(or what have you.)
