Wow, that's not enough, but I can think of a few that have helped shape how I listen to music and what I listen to.
The Stones certainly influence a lot of what I like, but when push comes to shove, I pretty much just like Rock music, some Country and some Blues and Rockabilly. I like music with guitars. No guitars, I'm probably not interested. And I've tried. But jazz, classical, whatever - don't care, I just don't like it.
The Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks. This just changed everything. I didn't understand why some people utterly hated them, and had what I considered at that time to be "good taste." That's when I found out that a lot of them didn't even listen to it. So that's when I started understanding that it was more than okay when someone was talking about some band that if I hadn't heard that band, I was okay saying, "I don't know anything about that," before I said, "That sucks." Now, I'm a hypocrite and have said "That sucks" without listening to things, but I've been right because I I just know that I don't like the new Moody Blues album, or latest Top 40 band because I have a frame of reference.
The Runaways - First album. Chicks rock, too. Chicks that were just a couple years older than me sounded pretty great to me, and I thought they were so cool. So I've always had records by women, and when I heard about The Buzzcocks, and people were dismissing them because they were just high school aged kids, I checked them out, and found yet another goldmine of great music.
The Flamin' Groovies - Teenage Head. I learned it doesn't matter if anyone else likes the album or has heard of the band or not. Some of the things I like more than anything in the world are just widely ignored by people. Oh, well. At least it makes me happy!
Bachman Turner Overdrive II - I could probably switch out Sweet's Desolation Boulevard or Grand Funk's We're an American Band. Big, dumb, hard Rock. Very midwestern (even though one band is British and one is Canadian). I don't care if this kind of music is critically acclaimed and I'm okay if they hardly play it anymore because it's the kind of music that should have run its course by now. But this stuff ROCKS if you ask me. Yeah, maybe I do listen to some of it for nostalgic purposes, but I still just think it's really good music. Because it's fun.
Yes - Yessongs. I don't go for a lot of Progressive Rock, but I love Yes, and I always have. This was a major purchase for me long ago, and I still think it's a superb album. I don't think the lyrics are as profound as I did when I was 11 (in fact I'd agree with you if you said half of the lyrics were inane), but man, I listened to this record constantly for years.
I'll throw in an honorable mention, because this album really never existed in my world until I was much older, but the songs were always the ones I turned up on my old AM radio, that I thought were big hits, but apparently were just regional songs, or songs that got a shot late at night. But these days the Nuggets album is one of my go to albums for good mental health. The Standells, The Swingin' Medallions, The Count Five - I thought these were huge bands, but they weren't. But I love them all.
