Being on here has made me appreciate more about the early role that Brian played in the Stones as founder and multi instrumentalist. His playing of slide on Little Red Rooster and No Expectations and also the hypnotic Last Time riff is all really great stuff. His multi instrumental talents are well known too and his song writing skill is exemplified on Ruby Tuesday.
What I want to ask is what is your opinion about his removal from the group in 69? Was it the right decision or a heartless coup d'etat by Mick and Keith? The reasons they give are that 1. Brian was so lost in drugs and alcohol that he couldn't function anymore as a working member of the group and 2. They wanted to tour the US and Brian couldnt get a visa. Are these valid reasons? Of course we all know the background and long term factors involved in Brian's decline with Mick and Keith slowly taking over the ditrection of the group and Keith stealing Brian's girlfriend. Should Mick and Keith have just waited for 6 months or a year and given Brian time to get himself together? Or was that too much to ask with the glimmers wanting to get on to the next stage of world dominance? Brian's removal did result in MT joining the group and the Stones' best ever sustained work?
What do you all think?
