Speaking as a veteran, I find it hard to believe how easily some of our countrymen are willing to be manipulated into believing a false narrative. The long-standing symbolic act of taking a knee says "pay attention - there is something more important than the game gong on here". In this instance, it speaks to entrenched racism at the highest level of government, unpunished acts of police brutality, and a need for inclusion of all citizens. It has absolutely nothing to do with the flag or the military. Right now Trump, Fox News and others on the far right are trying to control the narrative. The squirrel trick they are playing is along the lines of "hey don't look at those things, look at this big shiny flag I'm waving, End of discussion!!" Those who see through this ploy and refuse to take the bait will always have their patriotism questioned, because that's what scoundrels do when they need to call divert attention away from real pressing issues. The intent is to disuade people from exercising their constitutional right to free speech, and then and carry on with business as usual. Fortunately, this repressive authoritarian strategy is not working as well as the right has hoped it would. All we can do is fight back against the spread of misinformation with truth & facts.
