Barrett, and not Roger Waters, was the original leader and guiding light for Pink Floyd. He dominates the first PF album with great songs and some unworldly guitar work, but by the second album he only managed one song and quickly existed the group after he could no longer perform onstage. His long-time friend David Gilmour stepped in to fill his shoes, but they could never really be filled, and PF II is arguably an entirely different group even if 3 of the 4 members carried on with it.
Many are under the impression that Barrett exited music altogether after his departure from PF but in fact he rekindled his creativity, writing and recording three solo albums: "The Madcap Laughs", "Barrett", and "Opel". The latter was never released due to so-so sales of the first two, but was eventually released several years ago and has had several vinyl repressings in recent years. His solo stuff has stood the test of time, although it tends to be in the form of simpler songs and less abstract than much of the earlier PF material. Gilmour and other PF members provided production and instrumental backing for most of his solo recordings, the exception being the drums which were provided by Jerry Shirley of Humble Pie fame.
