Technically speaking, Barrett didn't contribute to the Floyd in the 70s, but his influence and spirit were deeply part of the band's output and certainly in the minds of its members. Deeply. I don't think his influence is overstated. He was brilliant...and mad, yet, in stark contrast to the Brian and the Stones, he was appreciated and recognized despite his troubles and even though the circumstances became difficult he was never forgotten and kicked around the way Brian was.
Both of his solo albums are absolutely wonderful, and like fellow troubled genius Skip Spence (member of Jefferson Airplane and Moby Grape) his solo work imparts equal parts madness and brilliance with haunting and incredibly mood-altering songs. I love him. But perhaps even more I love that Pink Floyd didn't forget him and their debt to him, even contributing in many ways (both musically and in terms of other support) to his solo outings. Brian didn't have anything close to that kind of understanding. If you get a chance, give his stuff a good and thorough listen...
