He was also schizophrenic, a condition that by all accounts developed concurrent with his drug use. Brian Wilson was also afflicted by this double whammy, but seemed to have experienced a better outcome over time. Unfortunately, chemical management of mental illness was not available to Syd back then. Interesting to note that Barrett was a prolific artist, and continued to paint for decades after he left music behind. In most but not all cases he would photograph his works and then destroy them, moving on to the next project. Google "Art of Syd Barrett" and you might be amazed at what you see. The man was reclusive in later years, refusing to engage in discussions of music or much of anything else, but it was all in the manner of transferring his creativity from one art form to another, and on his own terms.
