RE: stones songs going up

Indian girl is awesome, and always has been. The rest you mentioned are so sweet too, except for down in the hole and luxury, those are not my favorite. My Obsession is a real standout, with its super-groove piano-organ mix going on on one side and the sneering vocals over the top. It is one that I didn't know Brian Wilson in particular loved until I read his new bio a couple months ago. That is real compliment, one which was returned by Jagger. I found this out upon reading the Rolling Stones Ultimate special collecter's edition magazine, from the makers of Uncut, which contains old interviews in the 60s from Melody Maker and NME and such. Jagger said the Beach boys were "ruggers" (sorry, I'm an American and have no idea what a "rugger" is, or was...) but that Brian in particular he really liked because he wasn't like the rest. He also said that the drummer of the Beach Boys couldn't keep time to save his life, which was true, but at the time I guess the Stones didn't realize how much the wrecking crew in LA played on actual Beach Boy records but not for live touring.

Anyway, the Stones songs that are really favorites of mine right now are all the ones on Decembers Children through Satanic Majesties. It is such a maligned period in the Stones history, aside from the singles, but I consider it a rich a varied treasure trove of high-quality experimentation. And it is heavily due to Brian Jones. Yes, Jagger/Richards were exploring new songwriting territory with great results but without Jones they would have fallen flatter than they even did. And they definitely fell flat at the time to many critics and fans who thought it was second-rate Beatles--and Kinks--copying during those albums. He is all over 'Buttons and 'Majesties, carrying the group in the studio and lifting the songs up in beautiful and new ways. (one weird example of this, almost in this period, is that the "trumpet" in child of the moon is actually Brian's sax, something I hadn't really focused on.) His explorations at the time were really ahead of the time.

I know I've harped on this before, but it bears repeating that it is SUCH SUCH a shame that he has been forgotten and erased from history to the extent that he has. And it's not as if he didn't recognize the genius of his bandmates either. He is quoted at a Melody-Maker "Think-in" on Nov. 4th, 1966 on Mick Jagger: "He's the best pop performer Britain's ever had. A great inspiration...without Mick, the Stones would have been nothing." Quite right, of course.
