I don't think he's "tarnished with racism". I said it's dangerous when white folk use the word thinking that because everyone knows they love black culture so much, they can't be tarnished by using it. The word has a life of its own and will bite any white person who uses it (and most black too, though it's obviously more acceptable to be used ironically among people of color.)
It was 1971 and white folk didn't always think through the consequences of using the word.
