Oh, yes, that. I'd forgotten, I guess I need to brush up on my lyrical depth. I've been more of a sound-guy and historian of events.
While I don't know whether it was appropriate or not for Jagger to use the word, I reject the notion that this would in any way tarnish him with racism. Consider what he was going for in terms of the narration. It doesn't mean he subscribes to it. And consider the rest of the song! Finally, consider Jagger and the Stones and their history, and the fact that when the music world distanced itself from "blackness" as the 60s became the 70s the Stones always went out of their way to name-drop influences and assign credit. They are still doing this today, just look at Blue and Lonesome! The Stones have not always been smart or fully appropriate of things they've done and written, indeed Brown Sugar and the song Some Girls are better examples of arguments to racism, and especially misogyny, than Sweet Black Angel, but I don't believe it is valid at all to accuse them of inherent and purposeful racism.
Regarding the word itself, I am aware of its history and importance, but in this day and age I don't think anybody anywhere, black or white, should be using it. Just, why??
