Fleetwood Mac became a totally a new and different band 3 times early on and in less than a 10 year period. They got away with it mainly because it all started to take place way back in their early days, around 1970. Plus they used the name of the 2 guys who were always in the band, so they got away with it for that reason, too. It's kinda like Paul McCartney and Wings, as long as they went by that name, it didn't matter how often the band members changed, and Paul had a revolving door there.

So I do think it has a lot to do with when the changes take place. If it happens when the band is still very young, it's not a big deal, but if it happens years after the band broke up, and then they later reform with only one or two original members, then there's a major problem there in using the old name.
