How are they supposed to stop someone playing their music? They would have to have had a crystal ball going forward however many years, stating clearly in their contract with a music publisher that on no account could anyone play their recordings at public events without their permission!
A political event and a public event are 2 different things under U.S. laws when it comes to music and a few other things. It has to do with protecting people from being associated with a politician who they don't support - whom is making it look like they support him, and this has been held up in court before.
But this only has to do with U.S. laws and politics, I have no clue what the laws are in other countries on this. This law was just noted on one of the TV networks about a month ago, when it came up about the Queen song and could Queen sue Trump since they aren't Americans, and the answer was yes, they can. A candidate for any office in America cannot use a artist's copyrighted music unless he or she gets permission first. It is not the same as a radio station playing the same music, which is covered under a totally different law. Yes, if a candidate plays a artist's music after being granted permission to do so, the candidate still needs to play royalties to the artist, but they first must have permission to play the music in the first place at political rallies. Yet most politicians still don't ever ask before they do, but they are breaking the law when they do this, since again, it ins't the same as playing the song on the radio.
Once an artist tells a candidate to stop playing their music because they don't support the candidate, as these 3 bands have flat out stated, and if the candidate continues to do so (like Trump is doing), he is setting himself up to be sued, in a case he will lose. However, such lawsuits rarely ever go to trail, not because the artist has no case - they totally have a case. The problem for the artist is that they know it could be bad business for future sales of their music, since they more than likely will turn off some of their fans who support the candidate who they would have to sue. Because of that, assholes like Trump can get away with doing this. But it's not because the artist has no case, again, they totally do. But they at the most, only have to tell the politician to stop using their music, and that is where it usually ends. But we are not talking about a average politician in this case here, we are talking about a fascist pig name Trump who doesn't care about lawsuits, and who doesn't give a shit about being a decent human being. He only cares about promoting himself by any means he sees fit, and he doesn't care about the law and if he gets sued again for the thousandth time. Being sued is just another normal day for this asshole named Trump.
