How are they supposed to stop someone playing their music? They would have to have had a crystal ball going forward however many years, stating clearly in their contract with a music publisher that on no account could anyone play their recordings at public events without their permission!! It isn't at all complicated in normal usage - it's only in exceptional circumstances like this that it becomes impossible. Back in the day few if any musicians owned their own music publishing company, so they signed to a publishing company - however, even if they owned the publishing company, there'd still be the very same problems. It's just not part of the music publishing deal - the contract is all about getting the music out there in the world, not stopping it! I don't see what grounds they could actually FIND to take legal action - which is why I'm curious to see what Paul Rodgers' lawyer is doing. What legal grounds would there be to stop Trump? The fact that they don't want to be associated with him and have requested cease and desist, really isn't going to stand up in court because he's not done anything illegal. The very fact that it's on TV means that royalties have to be paid. So everything is completely above board - it's a matter of morality, and it's not sufficiently immoral to be classified as criminal activity - it's merely a lack of respect for other people,
