It is so cool to see that the polls are so popular! Obviously they are a lot of fun for many people. And last week's Stones poll sends out a really clear message, doesn't it. Whether or not the band (well, Mick J really) is interested in taking heed is another story, but the message could not be any plainer.
"Start Me Up" in this week's Stones poll (sorry Wls), with "Angie" as a richly-deserved runner up.
Robbie Krieger in the first rock poll. No contest. Robbie is a superb guitarist, classically trained, yet he never makes any of those "best guitarists of all times" lists (not that those mean anything). He also wrote or co-wrote (with Jim) many of the band's songs. The signature song, "Light My Fire", is all Robbie's, Jim didn't write a single note or word of it.
I'm not a fan of either song in the second rock poll, but I think that the Zep song is the better choice of the two.
For the first time since these lyrics questions started in the Beatles poll, I had trouble choosing. I ended up going with the "Glass Onion" lyrics, which show John at his most cynical and desillusioned point. The widening rift between him and Paul is very apparent in those few words. And IMO, the ability to express something vividly in just a few words is the mark of a truly great lyricist.
