RE: Common themes in Stones songs

I think it's survival, and just scraping by in the bad times.

They're like the opposite of the Beatles, who pretty much stuck to songs about the good times and cheering people up, for the most part. Their few "sad" song, like Yesterday, are just kind of maudlin. The Stones are the flip side - characters who are down and out, afraid, isolated, have nowhere to turn but drugs and frustration, sex and pain, whatever. Most of their albums stick pretty close to this, but have a different take on it. The message in the end is that you're going to survive, because that's just what we have to do. What I like about the Stones is that, unlike sad songs by other bands, there's pretty much never any surrender or whining in their message. It makes it more relatable, but also a source of comfort.
