I hav heard some people say that the music of the Rolling Stones is all about sex. I don't believe this for one second. Sure, some songs seem to focus on sex or have this underlying theme of sexual, romantic relations. But there is so much more going on in so many songs.
One recurring theme I hear in the Stones is the concept of what I simply call "the outcast". We hear many images of people who are poor, outcast, downtrodden, disenfranchised, gone over to the dark side, stoned, and ragged.
There's a lot of this on Begger's Banquet, especially in one of my favourite songs - Jigsaw Puzzle. Something about that Lugar toting gangster with a nice side to him. Or that Bishop's daughter whose been an outcast all her life - funny, 'cause I actually knew a Bishop's daughter who was an outcast. There's much more of this on the BB album too. Salt Of The Earth, Dear Doctor, Sympathy For The Devil. But we also hear this stuff on Let It Bleed. And then there's Exile On Main Street: the cover itself is about freaky outcasts.
What do you all make of this? And I would be curious to hear what other themes you hear in the Stones music.
