My statement re Richards' guitar ability as opposed to that of Jones, was based on a consideration of their whole body of guitar work up until Jones' departure. As someone who has been playing guitar since the age of seventeen, I consider that Richards playing was more accomplished, and that would probably be the reason that he handled the majority of the lead work.
I noticed that someone below has made mention of 'Charlie Is My Darling'. I remember going to see that film(think it was only the second public showing in the U.K, and I wrote a wee review here), and being totally impressed by a young Richards playing 'Salty Dog Rag', and Bert Jansch's 'Needle of Death' I think it was. I knew that that was the sort of stuff Richards had been getting turned onto at Art School and other places, but until that film I had no idea just how good he was at it, at that young age.
One style of playing that Jones seemed to have the edge over Richards is 'slide'. While his slide playing was pretty straightforward, I've always thought Jones had beautiful tone. That's not just down to playing quality instruments, although it helps, that's to do with touch and feel.
