My thinking is, that through the long hours they spent playing together at Edith Grove etc., they would have long since worked out who could do what on the guitar. It would be impossible not to have, and I think that is why when they started performing, Richards tended to be taking the lead.
The fact that Richards had guitar covered (his sense of rhythm and timing is also accepted in the guitar world as impeccable), allowed Jones to explore other areas for which he displayed a penchant and ability.
