RE: JJF/Satisfaction/The Who/Fabs/&VS

Back in the day, John Entwistle was perceived as being that quiet chap who went largely unnoticed while the rest of his band tore up the stage. 40 some years ago, Showmanship tended to trump musicianship. Since then, his musical prowess has become recognized on a much larger scale, and more than a few would consider him to be the best musician in The Who, if not one of the best 2 or 3 bassists in the history of rock.

Kenny Jones has always been a solid drummer, but once in The Who his musical reputation seemed to suffer from constant comparisons to Keith Moon, which was not entirely fair since there was only one Keith Moon and in a sense no one could really replace him. When he exited, the sound of the Who was bound to change for better or worse, and Kenny was under the microscope as somehow being the cause of it. Drummers and musicians should be judged on their own merits and less so as a comparison to the style or persona of an earlier band member. So while John may have been under-rated at one point, that seems no longer to be the case. Kenny was great in Small Faces and Faces, and fit the bill fine in the post-Moon Who, although Pete's songs may not have been as strong as before. For that reason, I went for Kenny as most under-rated member of the Who.

I could have gone with either George of Ringo as most under-rated in the Beatles. Since George's star shone brightly in the public eye with his contributions to "Abbey Road" and as a solo artist with "All Things Must Pass", that oversight seemed to be resolved long ago. Ringo is a special case. He was certainly nowher near as creative in the songwriting department as the other three, but musically he weighed in equally as far as forging the band's sound, always playing for the song and as vital to the Beatles as Charlie is to the Stones. Once dismissed by many as a goofball in the drummer's seat, he was often sold short. No slouch however, and Ringo gets my vote.
