Oh I like to believe they tried to return to the old school sound, but either it was a half hearted attempt or they don't have what it takes anymore. IMO it's a combination of those two. Taking a yes-man to do the production did the rest. I hope they never record a studio album again if their aim is Bang part II. It would add more damage to their legacy.
Sweet Neocon: love the message, but it's nowhere near a complete song. If you pick out that one in particular, it's like saying 'what a beautiful car' when all you see is a rusty frame.
Dangerous Beauty shows what a lot of critics said in the past: the band that is active as the Stones is the worlds best paid cover band. It has little to do with the band that once was. To call that one not convincing is an understatement. The Stones sound like a joke on that one.
The last time we saw a glimpse of the old Stones was when they made Voodoo Lounge and did the Stripped sessions. Why? I think they're at their best when they have something to prove. They had to show they were still a great rock band without their bass player. Since then there's been an occasional hickup (Saint Of Me, Don't Stop) but nothing that should get anyone even near excited.
As for why people like it as much: I can only guess. Perhaps it's because people have been waiting for so long that they would be pleased with anything the band would throw at them. You mention B2B: It must've been those sessions where they realised they couldn't reinvent themselves anymore.
