So began the liner notes for the Stones' first LP. Those prophetic words became more and more true as the years went by. The Stones came to epitomize a generation as they infused our culture with a surly, hedonistic individualism that laughed at the staid lifestyle of our elders and their "petty morals" (Keith Richards, 1967). They broke barriers in sexuality and sex roles, clothes and hairstyles, drugs, religion and--yes--politics. The Rolling Stones were and are the polar opposite of uptight, straight-laced, crewcut, pucker-butt militaristic pigs and their ignorant, misled minions.
Amazingly, though, we now have self-proclaimed Stones "fans" who glorify butchers like Ariel Sharon and pinheads like Dubya Bush, who cheer for wars of aggression and then have the temerity to declare that you can't be a real Stones fan if you like the Beatles. Hell, the STONES dig the Beatles, moron!
YOU--yes, you, Josh Esq., steel wls, Maxlugar and the rest of you armchair warriors--are the phony Stones fans. You may enjoy the music, but you haven't taken it to heart. It hasn't touched your soul, if you have one. It hasn't changed your cellular structure. You may swim in the sacred river but your sins have not been washed away. You are not part of the "way of life" of the Stones. So give it up. Stop pretending to be Stones fans, donate your CD collections to some poor but honest rocker, and go buy a Toby Keith album!
