Some interesting observations and comments, but let me add a little to my original thread. Although I arbitrarily chose 6 months to a year as a general time frame, it may take some people longer to totally embrace an album as one of their favorites. I suppose the true litmus test would be how often you listen to the cd YEARS down the road, as one of the posts mentioned.
The Stones' greatest works, as I see it, are the songs that sound 'timeless' regardless of when they were recorded. 'Gimme Shelter' may have been released in 1968 but it still sounds fresh and exciting in 2005. I think the entire 'Let It Bleed' album can be categorized as such.
It's refreshing to hear fans refer to some of the lesser-known releases of the past 20 years as some of their favorites. Many people abandoned the Stones when musical tastes changed during the 70s and 80s but those of us who remained loyal (as well as those newer fans who have checked out the Stones' backcatalog) have been rewarded with some great songs. Our gain...their loss.
As for judging an album's quality based upon how many songs I would like to hear live, well again, everyone has their own way of determining a record's greatness. There are songs that I would like to see performed in concert that haven't been done before, but mostly to see how the song is "treated".
Some songs translate well to the concert stage while others do not. There are those Stones' songs where the live version is quite different from the studio version and, in some cases, totally surpasses the studio take. Although I am a fan of the original version, I can think of no better example than 'Midnight Rambler'. This song was meant to be played in front of an audience and is an absolute crowd pleaser; I would be disappointed if it were left off the set list.
Anyway, I myself am starting to "ramble" a bit but I wanted to say it's great to be a part of the discussions on this board and I'm looking forward to reading your posts once 'A Bigger Bang' is released.
