RE: thought the same thing Fatmo

Organ failure vs. Dementia?

Since Fatmo asked this too, from what I understand, organ failure is often listed as the cause of death when a person dies and had dementia, especially when the dementia isn't as well on and in its early stages. That was more than likely the case for Cassidy, as I believe he was only diagnosed 2 or 3 years ago with having it. Some people can live for 10 to 12 years with it (my dad did), the lucky ones die within 2 or 3 years before they are vegetables or near vegetables. But it also depends on what kind of dementia you have, with alzheimer's being the worst of the kinds you can get.

Cassidy was still playing live shows early this year from what I read, so his dementia was still in the early stages. But I guess it depends on which part of your brain is affected by it the most, as to what course it takes. I noted the other day that a close friend of mine is now dying from dementia and has forgotten how to walk in the last few of months. You think once you learn how to walk as a toddler, you will never forget, but it is still something that your brain controls and if that part of your brain dies before you do, then you can't walk anymore. Same thing happens to some of your other organs that of course, are automatically controlled by your brain. So in many cases it's the dementia that is causing the organ failure. I had another friend who died of alzheimer's about 10 years, and as his daughter put it, he died of heart failure, even though he had a strong heart. But that didn't matter, as the heart muscles that pump the blood into the heat, just stopped working, as they just "forgot" how to do their job. That is of course a layman's way of putting it, since your body's organs have no separate brain of their own, but it is your brain that controls everything that your body does, so yes, my friend died because his brain forgot how to pump blood throughout his body. In Cassidy's case, they said "organ failure", which means they more than likely aren't 100% sure which main organ failed. They could do an autopsy and find out, but many families in a case like this will say 'please don't', since it was the dementia that really killed him regardless if his heart or another organ was what stopped his heart from beating.
